Great plant!!,

"I bought one of these butterfly bushes three years ago. When it arrived it was tiny and I was completely skeptical about it growing to the 5' height mentioned. Imagine my surprise when in the very first summer it zoomed to 5'+ and bloomed like mad! I pruned it very close to the ground in early spring and the second summer it actually got even bigger (planted on a southwest corner of my home in full sun, heavy soil, rarely fertilized), and again bloomed like mad. The third year I actually didn't get a chance to prune it at all, and it reached 7' tall! This delighted me because I have a large garden. I just dug it up to relocate it yesterday and I will say that the taproot was a bear to get out of the ground but I'm here on the site ordering several more of these amazing, gorgeous plants to fill some spots where I need height and loads of butterfly-attracting vibrant color! Great plant."

Bursting Out in Purple All Over!,
September 6, 2008
Submitted by atwhatcost

"I bought this plant from Burpee last year and was pleased with how quickly it grew and how many flowers it produced. It out performed my first one, which was bigger in its first year. I assumed that it couldn't get any bigger or better.
Right now, it has so many flowers on it, if we take a quick glance at it, it looks like even the leaves are purple! It looks like a flurry of purple. We've seen one variety of butterfly on our butterfly bushes in previous years. This year, we've seen two new varieties, too, and the bumble bees don't get bothered, because there is plenty of nectar for everyone. (They've become quite terrritorial with the flower buds on the malabar spinach, so we know they can get bothered.)
I hate the end of gardening season, but I'm now looking forward to see if it's possible it can outperform itself next year! I can't imagine it can!"

Can't wait to see year 2,
September 2, 2007
Submitted by butterflygardener
"I just planted the butterfly bush this year, so I didn't have too many big blooms, but I can't wait to see it next year. The color is amazing, very vivid. It grew quickly and seems hardy."
