"The Big Mama tomato is the best tomato I have grown. It is excellent in sauces. I use a pressure canner and the Big Mama has just the right amount of juice and not that many seeds. We only grow about a dozen plants each year and the yield is out of this world. The plants are easy to care for and produce a tomato that is uniform in size, taste and texture. Burpee has devoped a great all around tomato. We also use it in salads and on sandwiches and burgers. Great job Burpee!"

""Big Mama" has replaced other plum tomatoes in my garden! I have won several blue ribbons at our agricultural fair in the plum tomato category with the beautiful tomatoes that Big Mama consistently produces. I have found the fruit to be quite uniform as well. Nothing compares to having home-made spaghetti sauce in January from the loads of wonderful flavored tomatoes harvested in the summer from these incredible plants! The tomatoes are great eaten in a salad or used in cooking- I really love this variety!"

"Big Mama is absolutely the best plum/paste tomatoe I have ever grown. The size is several times larger than any of the other varieties I have tried and remains consistent through the season. The fruits were blemish free and the plants were disease free. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it makes a fabulous all purpose tomatoe for sauce, slicing, salads and soups. Big Mama has a good flavor and it produced prolificly until the first hard frost. The frost survivors had no problem ripening on my counter and kept very well. My search for a worthwhile plum/paste tomatoe has ended. But now another search for a "favorite" will begin because of all the new found space in my garden plot! "

Best in Class,
August 24, 2008 Submitted byLakeErieGarden from Lorain, OH
"Of all the paste tomatoes I have ever tried, it will be hard for Burpee to top this one. Maybe, Jersey Devil is better flavor, well it is but this tomato packs plenty itself. I now think this is the best paste tomato out there for overall flavor, appearance, production and SIZE. I do not want to understate what a fine quality eater this is, much better than your average Roma. I can't come up with a negative. Maybe it could ripen a little earlier but even then, my other heirloom paste tomatoes don't ripen until late, late August and early September and so in comparison this is much better. This is going to replace all other paste tomatoes in my garden."

Best sauce tomato!!!,
August 17, 2008 Submitted byCJJo from Naperville, IL
"We were looking for a large plum tomato to make our sauce making easier. We found the tomato, Big Mama. I'm sorry that other customers did not have our success. We had large, perfect tomatoes. We grew 8 plants and this past weekend harvested about 100 tomatoes. We made sauce, used them in fajitas and had them on a salad. We were really impressed. These meaty tomatoes had less seeds and lots of meat. We will grow more plants next year."

Fave Tomato,
August 13, 2008 Submitted byCorni from Cincinnati, OH
"Ditto on all the awesome reviews this tomato has received. It's my favorite growing, tasting and cooking by far. I usually only grow them in my garden, but this year I put one in a container just for kicks. As long as I water it every other day, it does fine. And the container forced the fruit to ripen at least a week earlier than those in the ground. I'm going to do that even earlier next year so I can enjoy a few tomatoes sooner."

Not For Self-Watering Container,
August 6, 2008 Submitted byRobert3son from Monmouth County, NJ
"I tried these plants for the first time and was extremely disappointed. I planted 2 plants in a very large self-watering container and as of 8/6/08, have picked only 3 edible tomatoes which were half the size as advertised. The rest(4-5 dz) were discarded due to severe blossom end rot. Although growing tomatoes in containers is more susceptible to BER, I've never experienced anything this bad. Never Again"

Little production and blossom end rot,
July 7, 2008 Submitted byCoralB from NC
"Like some of the other reviewers I have had problems with leaf curl and very bad blossom end rot. I have 12 other plants in the garden and all but one other is doing fine so I do not think the BER is due to watering or calcium definiciency. The few tomatoes I have managed to salvage, however, do have a nice sweet taste. Unfortunately my plant was very low yielding and the tomatoes have not been nearly as large as the photo suggest (really the size of a large roma)."

By far the best tomato plant!,
June 27, 2008 Submitted byBavaria from Bear, De.
"This is the second year for growing this tomato plant from seed, only this year I grew 27 plants. Last year 6. Great taste, my wife and I jar sauce and salsa with home grown hot peppers. This plant cranks out huge numbers . Had some leaf curling but not a concern. Strong stems and with mulch very little watering. Low mantaince except for support during high winds. Burpee has the blue ribbon on this tasty tomato."

June 13, 2008 Submitted byDennis from Mt Airy, NC
"I've been planting this variety for the last three years, and it really does produce! I do notice that I get more leaf curling on this type. I wondered if anyone else experiences that, or has a reason for it. Maybe nothing to worry about, or something I could correct."

May 13, 2008 Submitted byscrumbles from AZ
"I've been growing tomatoes since I was a little girl and have actually had to get a ladder to pick my tomatoes in past years. Big Mama Hybrid gave me nothing but rotten ends on all the tomatoes even after a lot of TLC to correct the problem. Yesterday I gave up and tore out all the plants."

Big Mama Tomatoes,
January 21, 2008 Submitted byIngrid from Londonderrry, NH
"This is the best Roma I have ever worked with. And I've been gardening for over 30 years. I make the best bruchetta with fresh basil and these tomatoes. They don't break down and have great, fantastic flavor. Plus they slice up real well for the top to a pizza! Thanks! Ingrid"

Excellent Tomato,
August 10, 2007 Submitted byplntluvr67
"Loved growing this tomato. It was a very prolific producer. This is the first roma type tomato with such a large size. I always love to order the plants because things move much faster when you plant them. This tomato is excellent for using to make sauce with. This tomato will be on my list for next year!"

Very disapointed,
August 10, 2007 Submitted byterrie
"I really had high hopes for this tomato, but plants had leaf curl, starting a few weeks after they were planted and a lot of tomatoes with end rot. I planted supersteak and big boy and they were beautiful, no problems. They were all planted in the same area with the same care and watering. I think these are more prone to problems than other types of tomatoes."

August 10, 2007 Submitted byCandyK from East Haven, CT
"This is a GREAT tomato. They are huge, meaty, few seeds and delicious. I planted two of these in pots and 10 in the garden. The ones in the pots went outdoors on May 1st, the ones in the ground went in a week later. All the plants are loaded with fruit. We were picking tomatoes from the pots the last week of July and the ones in the ground the 1st week of August. I will definetly plants these again next year."

"Purchased these last season and WOW! Our summer was hot and dry, with temps hitting in the 100+ everyday. With minimum maintenance, these plants were putting out fruits that weighed 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound! Very tasty and hearty. Stored very well with freezing and canning, kept their shape without turning to mush. Tomatos retain their sweet flavour throughout processing, but had a really hard time keeping the kids out of the garden and eating these right off of the vines! Got them on my list for this years planting, and next years, and next..."

"I discovered it is best to leave this tomato on the vine until completey ripened as the flavor is enhanced and do not find any green seeds when canning them. I really like this tomato for canning as the fruit is twice as large as other paste varieties, is easy to peel and most important is very meaty. As with all tomatoes they cannot be planted in the same place in the garden every year. Big Mama has large, healthy vines and have never had mold, rot or any other problems with the vine or the tomatoes. Have not experienced end rot even though we have had wet weather when ripening. Microbes in the soil along with good drainage make a big difference in how the plants and fruit grow and mature."

"Unfortunately we had a very wet summer last year. These tomatoes have a little point at the end that tended to hold drops of water. Then the tips would rot and ruin the whole fruit while it was still green. But, the ones I could bring inside and bag-ripen were great! Firm and meaty, very few seeds, a little milder tasting than other tomatoes but still very good. I made some great salsa with them! Overall they were good tomatoes but i would be cautious about trying them if you have a very wet climate."

"Big Mama is wonderful and I have used it for salsa, diced tomatoes, sauce and even stewed tomatoes. Scalds and skins easily for any of the above uses. Seed cavities are well defined so seeding for salsa and diced is easy.Picking is easy. Needs room as is big plant.Ripened right up to frost. Gets two green thumbs up from me."
