Best Yeild Ever!,

"Normally I plant seedlings. This year I tried starting from seed and could not be happier with the results. I used two different methods. For the first , I bought two big pots and threw a handfull of seeds into each one.I had many sprouts but they were overcrowded. They grew so big that I used them ornamentally. As for the second,I germinated single seeds. Then I planted them two feet apart in the garden. The single plants each grew to be bigger than the entire pots of Basil, far exceeding my expectations. I love basil and consume much of it.If it's not picked right,it won't taste as good or yeild as much. The best tasting leaves are the new ones on top of the plant.I pick them when they make a "star"formation .These must be picked before they flower or the plant will stop growing as fast, and will make more seeds than leaves. The more stars I pick, the more my plants bud. The stars that i cannot eat go in the freezer, vaccum packed and last me most of the winter. The other leaves I consider suckers.I don't eat them unless they look very good(green, thick and wrinkled)or I am desperate for leaves for my pesto. Japanese Beetles were the main pest. Nothing else seemed to bother them as long as they got some water . This has been my best year ever!"

Mainstay Herb,

"Another mainstay herb. Planted from seed, indoors, in very fine soil. Rather than cover with 1/4 inch of fine soil, I just sprinkle the seeds on top of the dirt, and then water them in with a watering can. More seem to come up that way, and grow faster, at least for me.
Great flavor, grows well. Mostly used for great red sauce with some of the greek oregano.
Can't take any chill, or it will die off. Don't set this one out too early."
