Very Fast Grower, July 5, 2009
Submitted by BrooklynGarden from Brooklyn, NY (read all my reviews) (read all my reviews)
"Started these Mid-March with light and heat. Very fast grower. If I could do over I would direct-sow or start indoors two weeks later. Transplanted them outside after Memorial Day 2009 and lost a few to very cool nights and major storms but the 20 or so that made it are thriving."

animals love them (not a good thing), August 26, 2007

"Last year I grew the climax marigolds and they were absolutely outstanding, so this year I decided to do several more kinds, including the Ladies Hybrid, Snowball, and Flagstaff, and of course the Climax variety again. For some strange reason, the animals, groundhogs in particular, are absolutely crazy about the Flagstaff marigolds. While they started off wonderfully (started about 6 weeks ahead of transpanting outdoors on Memorial Day weekend), I never got to enjoy them because of a losing battle where the animals would keep eating them nearly to the ground. Oddly, they left most of the others relatively unharmed. The Ladies Hybrids and Snowballs took some damage, but I was able to control it with hot-pepper spray, but nothing seemed to help with the Flagstaff Marigolds, and eventually they were eaten down to the ground and died. I'm very disappointed because by the time they were planted outside they were already huge and starting to flower. For whatever reason, the Climax Marogolds were left alone and did beautifully again. Not everyone will have my troubles with animals, so I woud recommend them, but I won't plant them again, even though I find it hard to believe that one variety is that much "tastier" than another. As they are all in the same general area, it seems that there must be something about the Flagstaff Marigolds that makes them more attractive to animals. The Climax will stay in my "permanent rotation" and the Ladies are so lovely and floriferous that I will plant them again (even though it is a lot of work to keep spraying them with hot-pepper spray). Best of luck to whomever tries them - they looked like they would have been fantastic had they not been eaten repeatedly."

"I planted the seeds directly in the ground. We had a mild spring with a fair amount of moisture. The plants did take time to grow in height before I saw buds, but once it did, the show began! I sure wish I could have taken pictures to show all of you. The deep orange color is breathe taking! However, this plant prefers it's space. Otherwise they don't fair out as well!
Thumbs up to this beauty!"
