Fast and Reliable!,
February 1, 2006 Submitted bydiymama from Mystic Island, New Jersey
"I am using this system for the first time. Last year I lost almost all of my plants to damping off, but with the channeled bottom tray, I didn't lose one! The tray has channels in it that hold water, so the plants wick up water as they need it, eliminating the act of overwatering! I started early, to "iron out the kinks" so to speak, but to my surprise, there were none! I had a lot of problems with other systems in the past. Using the Burpee system, I decided to try a few seeds each of broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, borage, and 4 o'clocks. To my amazement, seeds that usually take 10-14 days, took 24 hours! My broccoli and borage germinated the very next day, and the 4 o'clocks the day after! The whole system was placed in front of a west facing window, over an electric baseboard heater set to 72 degrees. After the plants germinated, I removed them one by one and put them under a flourescent light. They never got leggy, and now I have ready-to-transplant seedlings that have nowhere to go! (I will try to put them in the garden using cloches, after hardening them off.) It is only Feb 1st! (I am in zone 7, where the average date of last frost is around 2-4 weeks before Mother's Day.) All of my seeds germinated in the same way. I now know that this product is as reliable as the rest of Burpee's products! I highly recommend this to anyone who has had a problem with damping off, needs fast germination, or has impatient children. If you are a beginning gardener, this is virtually fool-proof! Happy gardening!"

cheap,
June 19, 2008 Submitted byricci
"This product was ruinied before the time it arrived at my house. It is made out of the cheapest material and i can already tell that transplanting will be very difficult. The cells were wrinkled and ruined and the so called "super pellets" are ridiculously not super. I would advise anyone to use thier money wisely and invest in something worth while. I was very dissapointed."

Excellent growing Kit!!,
June 3, 2008 Submitted bytarnee19 from Hamilton, NJ
"I am a first time buyer from burpee, and i got this kit for the seeds that i got from them, mainly vegetable ones.
It took only 2 days to germinate all my seeds, not a single one of them was missed. The soil pellets did an excellent job.
I had to call for a replacement for the tray as it was leaked most probably due to shipping and I can say that they have the best customer service. I definitely recommend buying products from burpee and Ive been doing it already.
THANKS BURPEE!!"

Clumsy and flimsy,
May 27, 2008 Submitted bydoodlebug from Red Lion, PA
"I purchased two of these systems from a major home improvement store. It looked like a great concept. I followed the instructions in setting it up and put it where I thought it would stay since the instructions said it would be tricky to move (they weren't kidding). The soil pellets were fun to watch swell up, although a few were flipped sideways when the water was poured in which resulted in compaction at the bottom of the cell. The seedlings sprouted and grew well, but that is the only good I can say about this system. I found the system flimsy and difficult to move around. The cell trays were clumsy (too many cells per tray) and very difficult to remove the transplants as the soil either stuck to the inside of the cell or completely fell apart in my hands. I lost more than a few of my seedlings in trying to remove them from the cells. The only part of this system I will be using next year will be the bottom tray. I have much better luck with using old fashioned method of saving the 6-pack trays from the garden center and using my own seed starting mix."

Soil Doesn't Work,
April 25, 2008 Submitted byLycopersiconlover from Central New Jersey
"I really loved the concept of this system when I bought it. The makeshift hydroponic tray underneath is great for keeping your seedlings moist, and the clear plastic cover really helps contain the humidity for fast germination. The problem with this system is the little jiffy (burpee?) soil pellets. I followed directions and they all seemed to expand after watering. The problem occured when I transplanted. I found 10-20 percent of the soil cells were rock solid at the bottom. The top appeared like nice fluffy soil, but when I transplanted, I found some of my seedlings were only growing in about an inch of soil! (This speaks well of burpees seeds!). Bottom line: the system is great and practical, but use your own garden soil/potting mix!"

Burpee Ultimate Growing System,
April 25, 2008 Submitted bydoed from Central Massachusetts
"This is my first year using the ultimate system. I have used many in the past, but this far surpasses any. I have had my plants growing for 4 weeks. They are lovin life. Before going away for a week, I made sure the tray was filled with water. When I came home, the plants were as happy as could be and STILL MOIST! I would recommend it highly to anyone that has a love for gardening and wants the seeds to flurish and grow into wonderful plants."

good idea, not reusable,
March 16, 2008 Submitted byMommyPam from St. Louis
"although it arrived with cracks and is very flimsy, some plants seem to grow well, just getting them out to transplant is a challenge... and so I won't buy one every year... I would rather spend money on plant supports and start them myself in sturdier and easy to work with pots...."

Can't See it Last "Many Years"!,
March 15, 2008 Submitted byszara from Long Islan, NY
"I AM happy with the results in my first time trying this out. The seeds definitely germinate early.
But, I cannot see the FLIMZY plant cells lasting after the first attempt to remove the seedlings to transplant them to bigger pots.
Also, if this system lasts for years, how come I don't see Burpee selling refill pellets? I only see that they sell the peat pellets that are both soil & pot.
I wish Burpee would explain how the fragile cells would last beyond the 1st year, and if they do, why don't they sell the refill pellets!!"

Mixed feelings,
March 14, 2008 Submitted byhpeter
"I am happy with how easy this product makes for taking care of the seedlings with taking the guess work out of watering. HOWEVER.....all of the plastic trays and cover are very thin, flimsy cheap plastic. I don't feel like it's going to last long at all. The top doesn't fit. I had to tape mine on. Please upgrade this product to a more sturdy plastic that will last for many years."

Very poor quality,
March 9, 2008 Submitted byAmishbagger from Chicago IL
"Lid is very poor fitting, seed trays are very clumsy and flimsy. I don't see how they will be re-useable. Bottom tray should be much more sturdy. Extremely poor value for the money. I will not recommend this product to anyone. On the plus side however the seed did germinate pretty quick."

Needs a bit of work,
March 5, 2008 Submitted bysunshinebaby from Long Island
"I was surprised that this system didn't work! It only worked for very hardy plants. And when trying to take seedlings out, the peat crumbled. I'll stick with the peat pots from now on. I liked how organized it was and the plastic cover, but that's about it.."

Worth Every Penny,
January 5, 2008 Submitted bySandyR from Cincinnati, OH
"Last year I bought just one of the Ultimate Growing Systems. I was totally impressed with it. I have various growing trays and this one, by far, is the best I have used. I will be buying more this year, as I start all of my vegetables from seeds and many of my flowers(both perennials and annuals) from seed each year. I used my tray under a grow light to get the seedlings started and established. After, I moved the plants to a south facing greenhouse window in my kitchen. Excellent results!!!"

Qucik and easy setup.,
December 26, 2007 Submitted bypookie from Historic Valley Forge, PA
"I was very excited to get my Burpee Ultimate Growing System. I ordered it just over a week ago and received it right away. That same day I started some herbs. Six days later and I can see little green shoots coming out of the soil. It is so nice to not have to worry about drowning the seeds since all the water goes in the bottom and is drawn up into the soil. No more washing seeds right out of the pots. I put mine in my southern window and added a grow light for later in the day. Right now, I only planted a few containers, but I plan to use it in the early spring to start my tomatoes and other summer crops. This was a great buy. I plan to buy more for friends."

BE CAREFUL with watering -,
April 17, 2007 Submitted bylizberry81 from Abilene
"I was not terribly impressed with this unit. The idea that it is 'reusable' and will last for years is rather optimistic as I doubt mine will last past this first set of seeds (it arrived with the plastic already cracked in several places.) I actually prefer the greenhouse kits from another company where the peat puffs up into a netted bag-like container. It's easier to poor off excess water when first expanding the pellets. I caution you to measure your water when first adding water to this unit -- use only as much as it says on the container as I tried to eyeball it and have had several of the cells fall prey to mold and staying over damp.
Overall, 'ok,' but once again: not terribly impressive."

Good Plan, Bad Construction,
April 7, 2007 Submitted bykf4ohz from Oneida, TN
"The Ultimate Growing System is an excellent idea. Wicking the water to the plants is the best way. The reservoir tray is the only problem. It is made very thin, and in the process of shipping and handling, the this base was wrinkled, causing holes. We did not realize this until the next day, when the water was everywhere but in the reservoir. Make the reservoir more sturdy, then you've developed the best system!"

System is not very mobile,
March 31, 2007 Submitted byKyle
"This is my first year trying this seedling system out and find it to be very good. I would suggest that a sturdier base for the Ultimate Growing System be made available since it can be moved around to be placed in the best sunlight. The amount of water used in preparing the individual cells and reservoir tray makes the system prone to buckling under the shifting of the water."

It is amazing."
