"Burpee Exclusive. Plump fruits from 2 to 4 lbs. each-sure to beat any record in the neighborhood. The luscious flesh is deep red all the way through with just the right balance of meaty solids and succulent juice. Smooth texture and rich, old-fashioned flavor make this the greatest extra-large beefsteak we've ever bred. Only from Burpee. Indeterminate. 80 days.
Sorry, state laws prohibit shipping plants to Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, California, Nevada. Plants ship in spring at proper planting time. ( click here for shipping schedule ) "

Porterhouse,
April 5, 2008 Submitted byshbeagle
"I ordered the plants to get a head start on hardiness for the Chicago suburb area and got them outside as soon as received. I was, however, extremely disappointed with the harvest. With 3 plants I got 2 large tomatoes. The other 6 were just average size. I think I will stick with the Supersteaks, I had excellent results with them."

A fat resistant tomato,
February 20, 2008 Submitted byBadbean
"I bought a pack of these tomatoes last season and out of the 15 seeds 8 of them started. Out of the 8 that started 3 plants lived past the first month or so. I ended up with one large mature plant that made it till the end of harvest. It was a strong desease resistant plant and while it is as slow grower it delivered huge, juicy, beautifully colored, great tasting tomatoes. It is a tough plant to grow with high casualties, but does deliver huge choice delicious fruit!"

Fantastic tomato,
January 21, 2008 Submitted byAvidGardener from Olathe, KS
"I grew the Porterhouse Beefsteak tomato this past year (2007) for the first time. I was looking for a huge meaty tomato with great taste & I found it in this tomato. I will grow this tomato every year in the future. I shared some with my elderly neighbor & he was amazed at the size, texture & taste. If you are looking for a tomato that will cover an entire slice of bread with one slice, this is the one. They are very prolific producers. I did not have problems with getting spots on them & rotting before they were ripe."

Wow! These are BIG tomatoes!,
December 16, 2007 Submitted byKAmbrose from Upstate, NY
"I purchased these last season and I had some germination issues, but I think I figured out the problem. These seeds really do not want to germinate when they are chilly. I initially planted them in peat pellets and placed them on the windowsill in my office. They didn't germinate at all and other varieties were way ahead of them. I ordered another pack and planted those, but I didn't give up on my first ones. As the windowsill got warmer, I started to see little sprouts and they quickly caught up to my other plants. I grow a lot of tomatoes and give plants to my friends, family and coworkers and everyone raved about the HUGE tomatoes this produced in abundance. My father and father in law have already put in their orders for me to grow them plants this year. Well done, Burpee!"

"Excellent variety for Southern California, moderate yield, it is November and I have 6-8 ripening on the (still vigorous) vine. Fruits were consistently 1lb and nicely shaped, meaty and flavorful."

Porterhouse not just steak,
October 27, 2007 Submitted byUtahgardner from Sandy, Utah
"I love large tomatoes. I've tried most of the large varieties offered by not only Burpee, but by others as well. Without a doubt, the porterhouse is th top of the line. Great taste, very little splitting, and it maintains the round shape well. I have received many favorable comments from friends that I give tomatos to each summer. Our growing season is about over so my family and friends will miss the best tomato ever until next year. Thanks Burpee"

What Great Tomatoes,
September 10, 2007 Submitted bySamsMom
"Have had great sucess with this one. Althought the yield has not been great, the tomatoes the plants produced were wonderful. Extreamly large tomatoes with a great taste. I have 26 tomato plants, 13 Romas and 13 other plants. The Porterhouse is a definate keeper and will do next year. Just took down the Black Walnut tree that has plagued my garden for 5 years and probably will for the next 5 years. But, things will get better"

Solid Performer,
September 9, 2007 Submitted byAnonymous Reviewer
"I planted 8 varieties of Tomatoes and all did well through the first harvest with regular watering, pruning and tomato cages. The porterhouse produced less #'s but more volume (in pounds of tomatoe flesh) than any of my other varieties. The biggest was about 3 pounds and the averge was probably 1.5-2 pounds. All but about 3 of these tomato's had a nice shape. Late in the season when my other tomatoes started splitting and coming in "cat faced" due to drought conditions with intermittent heavy rain showers these held out the best by far. Better yet, It is now 9/9/07 and I still have 7 green porterhouse tomato's that are looking to end up over 2 pounds at harvest. The best thing about this variety, however, is how long it lasts once picked. These tomato's take a freakishly long time to get soft and go bad, even after slicing! I found I could pick one of these and eat it 3 weeks later and still have firm flesh and solid slices. I was very pleased with this tomato and hope Burpee will continue to carry it. I started it from seed and every seed produced a plant. The fruit set early and the first harvest was around June 20th. Plants grown in a raised bed with Miracle Gro Garden soil."

good and bad,
September 8, 2007 Submitted byox1111
"The plants seem very fragile till about a foot and a half in size. The fruit has very good flavor the insects think so to most were last to insects. I grow six types of tomato and these were the only ones that the insects ate even with pesticides. The plant did not grow very full or large and the plant did not produce many tomatos but they were big and tasty. Taste is to me classic tomato a little acid and a little sweat and pretty meaty."

Portherhouse Tomato,
August 31, 2007 Submitted bymartyk61
"I have read several previous reviews that indicated poor germination in this variety. I had good germination with my seeds. The tomato plants are very resilient in that they weathered two early-season hailstorms and are producing huge tomatoes by the buckets full. I used bat guano as my fertilizer, and between the genetics of the porterhouse and the potency of bat guano, these tomatoes are unbelievable! I will definitely plant them again next year....they're a keeper!"

Problem with Porterhouse,
August 11, 2007 Submitted byBarry from Rochdale, Massachusetts
"I have always purchased seeds & plants from burpee's. I have found them to outperform all other brands. This year as usual I ordered my plants and seeds. I ordered the Hall of Fame collection and three Porterhouse plants ( I usually order three superstake plants, they always produce enormous fruit and lots of it). All my tomatoes are doing wonderfull except for the porterhouse. The plants from start did not transplant well. I almost lost one but with extra attention saved it. All the plants seem to have a tendency to wilt and are just not as strong as my other plants. My garden is large and they are in three different locations, these are the only plants doing poorly. They finally have started to come around but the fruit seems small and not an abundance like my other plants. I have been gardening for 30 years and have quite a bit of experiance growing tomatoes and other vegetables. I was wondering if any else has experianced this problem. Will update at harvest."

One of the biggest tomatos i've grown,
August 10, 2007 Submitted byplntluvr67
"First of all, I want to clarify that I grow all my veggies in containers so things are generally successful. Keeping that in mind, those Porterhouse Beefsteaks were an awesome force to be rec'kond with. I was so amazed at how big they all got. A large majority of them were just perfect. When grown in a container, be sure and have the tomato cage be strong and sturdy. If grown in a container, you can control the amount of water the plant recieves."

Porterhouse Tomato too Slow,
August 10, 2007 Submitted byNotomatoes
"I find this tomato slow to grow. The two plants I purchased were planted the same day I received them from Burpee. They are healthy, thriving plants. But we are in the middle of August and they still haven't gotten fruit. They have flowered the end of July, beginning of August, but no tomatoes yet. The plants have been fertilized and get full sun and plenty of water. They look great but are not bearing fruit yet."

Bad Tomato,

"I planted Brandywine, Big Mama and the Poterhouse live plants this year. The Poterhouse was a bust, sick plants, little fruit volume and fruits small in size. The other tomatoes are doing very well."
