Lisianthus flowers are worth the wait, July 22, 2006

"This past spring was the first time I've planted Lisianthus. I ordered the collection with three colors & all three types have turned out to have really wonderful flowers; but the foliage on the plants is "minimalist", with virtually nothing to recommend about the plant until the flowers begin (which takes quite a while). Burpee wouldn't send them early to get them further along indoors before our relatively short season in Vermont; however, these plants are day-length sensitive so maybe that is why.

We had a stunningly rainy spring in Vermont; and with all rain all the time for weeks (especially weekends) these did not go into the ground right away. I put them under the fluorescents with my seedlings for a while (on 18-hr day timer), and they finally got in the ground Memorial Day weekend. Oddly (to me), the three colors in the collection appear to be differentiated by plant size and bloom timing. The smallest plants have the blue flowers and began blooming earliest (first lone bloom early July), and the tallest plants are the dusty rose colored flowers, with the first bloom appearing late July (these tallest ones needed stakes). Plant size does not seem to affect bloom size, as all three have similar-sized flowers (if anything, the tallest plants may have the smaller flowers, but more blooms).

Now that they are finally blooming in numbers, I suspect they will be really beautiful throughout August and that I will want to grow them again next year, as the flowers are just that pretty (worth the wait). If you are looking for a relatively uncommon annual to grow with great flowers, these should do nicely; but group them relatively close together because they do not branch out at all - just grow straight up on main stem). Make sure they get frequent waterings because they do tend to start to look a bit wilty on a daily basis if the weather is consistently hot. I recommend these."

Beautiful-My new favorite., September 30, 2007
Submitted by Helen from Philadelphia, PA.
"I Container Garden on my deck. I plant mostly vegetables but save a couple of planters for flowers. The flowers add color to the garden and entice the bees and other good bugs to help with the veggies. I usually plant petunias but wanted something different this year. I purchased the Deluxe Lisianthus Rose Cut Collection because of the variety of color. The plants arrived in excellent condition. The plants did take longer to flower then I expected. Since I planted them in mid-May (planting time in my zone), it seemed forever until they starting popping in July. But Wow they have made up for their tardiness with constant displays of blooms. The one thing I wished I had known, but I'll be ready next year, was how leggy they get and in need of supports of some kind. Well, petunias are out, lisianthuses are in. My new favorite."

Beautiful blooms, August 30, 2007
Submitted by CindyH from Hopewell, VA
"I live in zone 7. This was the first time I have ever grown Lisianthus roses. I ordered them in May, received the plants in June, and they began blooming in July. The plants came in good condition even though the box was too small, and some of the plants were bent over when I received them.
Like the Vermont reviewer's plants, my Lisianthus plants did not spread. The information that came with them said that they would spread 8"-10", so I gave them plenty of room. In the end, I could have planted them right next to each other. Even though the plants did not spread, they produced a multitude of blooms. Today is Aug. 30, and they are still blooming.
The plants need to be staked. They grow tall, on thin stems, and will have several blooms on one stem, making them fall over.
The flowers on these plants are absolutely beautiful and are long lasting. I didn't cut any this year, so I don't know how long they will last in a vase. Even though the plants did not spread like I expected, I will be buying these again next year."
